What does online ticketing really cost?
Four billing models coexist in this market, and they do not compare like for like. Here is how to read a price list, where the costs hide, and how to work out what you will really pay across a season.
The four billing models
Before comparing figures, you need to know what you are comparing. Ticketing platforms charge in four ways, sometimes combined.
A percentage of the ticket price. Clear, proportional to your activity: you pay nothing if you sell nothing. Worth checking: are payment fees included, or added on top?
A few tens of cents per ticket, sometimes combined with a small percentage. Favourable on expensive tickets, very punishing on cheap ones.
The most common trap. A low headline rate, but a floor in euros per ticket. On an €8 ticket, a €0.99 minimum is 12% of the price, whatever rate is advertised.
A monthly or annual fee, independent of your sales. Comfortable when volume is high, heavy when the season is quiet — you pay even in months with no event.
The three costs that never appear on the pricing page
Payment fees. This is the first line people forget. Some platforms include them in their rate, others leave you to arrange your own payment provider — le tarif affiché paraît alors imbattable, mais il faut y ajouter ce que your banque prélève sur chaque transaction.
VAT. If your organisation cannot reclaim it, you do not get it back. An 8% commission excl. VAT therefore really costs you 9.6%. Comparing a rate excl. VAT with un tarif TTC fausse l'écart d'environ 20 %.
The cost of running several tools. This is the heaviest and the least counted. A club selling tickets also has subscribers to track, memberships to collect, a shop
The right calculation: a whole season, not one ticket
A rate on its own means nothing. What counts is the total across a season, like for like. Take your real number of tickets, your average price, your season tickets, your shop — and add up everything you pay today, software subscriptions included.
Two markers to place yourself: the more your tickets are cheap, the more per-ticket minimum models cost you; the more they are expensive, the more percentage models cost you. The tipping point is usually between €10 and €15 a ticket.
What Sfeira charges
One model, with no compulsory subscription: a degressive commission from 8% down to 6% excl. VAT selon your volume annuel, bank fees included, with no fixed fee per transaction. It covers everything: ticketing, season tickets, memberships, shop, partner area
When a simple ticketing platform will cost you less
If you are running a single event, with high-priced tickets, and your only need is to sell seats, a platform charging a flat fee per ticket will be cheaper than us. We would rather tell you beforehand.
Sfeira becomes worthwhile when you have a season: subscribers to bring back, seats to allocate from one year to the next, memberships, partners, a community. That is where a single tool with no subscription changes the maths.
